Five arrested for attack on foreign students over Taraweeh prayers

The Gujarat Police has arrested five persons in connection with the mob attack on international Muslim students in Gujarat University when they were offering namaz.

Three people – 22-year-old Kshitij Kamlesh Pandey, 31-year-old Jitendra Ghanshyam Patel and 21-year-old Sahil Arunbhai Dudhtiuva – were arrested on Monday, while two others, Hitesh Rakhubhai Mewada and Bharat Damodarbhai Patel, had been arrested on Sunday.

Four students sustained injuries after they were attacked by the Hindutva mob late on Saturday night. Videos of the attack went viral on social media, triggering outrage from people. Taraweeh prayers are special prayers offered in the congregation by Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan, once a year.

The students, two of whom were injured severely, are recovering at a hospital where their condition is said to be out of danger.

“State government is taking strict action against the perpetrators,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement on social media.

An incidence of violence took place at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad yesterday. State government is taking strict action against the perpetrators.

In one of the videos accessed by Maktoob, some men can be seen running as the police stand right outside the gate of the hostel. In other videos, the goons wearing Saffron Shawls can also be seen vandalising the vehicles parked outside the hostel, belonging to the foreign students. 

Approximately, 200 foreign students are studying in GU belonging to Asian, African, and European countries. The A – block of the hostel accommodates all these students.
